Ski Season 2026/27: Is Your Ski Kit Ready?
The countdown to another winter on the slopes is officially on! With ski resorts across Europe preparing to open for the 2026/27 season, now is the perfect time to get your equipment sorted, check your layers and make sure you're ready to make the most of every minute on the mountain.
Whether you're planning your first ski trip, taking the family away or looking to improve your kit after a few seasons, a little preparation now can make a big difference when you get there.
Here's what we'd be checking before heading off to the mountains this winter.
1. Time for a ski or snowboard upgrade?
If you've been using the same skis or snowboard for several seasons, it might be time to consider an upgrade.
Equipment technology continues to evolve, with brands developing lighter constructions, improved materials and designs to help make riding more comfortable and enjoyable.
If you're an intermediate skier who's ready to progress, the right equipment can make a real difference. Equally, snowboarders looking for better edge control, stability or a more responsive ride might benefit from exploring what's new.
Not sure what you need? Our team can help you find equipment that suits your ability, riding style and the type of terrain you enjoy.
2. Don't underestimate the importance of your ski boots
Your ski boots are arguably the most important piece of equipment you'll take on your ski holiday. Get them wrong and even the best skis in the world won't make up for uncomfortable feet!
If your current boots are too tight, too loose or simply past their best, now is a good time to look at alternatives.
At Snow Lab, our experienced boot fitters can help you find the right fit, with custom-moulded insoles available to improve comfort, support and control. You can book your boot fitting appointment online.
Remember, a good boot fit isn't just about comfort. It's about helping you ski better, too.
3. Helmet and goggles: Are yours up to scratch?
Safety and visibility should always be high on the checklist.
If your helmet has taken a knock, is showing signs of damage or no longer fits properly, it's worth replacing it. Even without visible damage, check the manufacturer's guidance on its lifespan and replacement.
Modern ski helmets offer features such as MIPS rotational-impact protection, improved ventilation and adjustable fit systems.
Your goggles deserve a little attention, too. Check the lens for scratches, make sure the fit works comfortably with your helmet and consider whether your current lens is suitable for the conditions you're likely to encounter.
From low-light flat conditions to bright bluebird days, having the right lens can make all the difference.
4. Get your layering right
Nobody wants to spend the day freezing on a chairlift or overheating halfway down a run.
A good layering system is the key to staying comfortable in changing mountain conditions.
Start with a breathable base layer to help manage moisture, add an insulating mid-layer for warmth and finish with a waterproof, breathable outer jacket and trousers.
Brands such as Picture, Rab and Columbia offer plenty of options for building a versatile mountain wardrobe.
And don't forget the smaller essentials: good ski socks, gloves or mittens, a neck warmer and a decent pair of thermals.
5. Don't leave it until the last minute
November and December are busy months for getting ready for ski season, so it's worth checking everything well ahead of your departure.
Give your skis or snowboard a once-over, check your bindings and arrange any servicing or repairs before travelling. Make sure clothing still fits (particularly if the children have had a growth spurt!) and check that all your accessories are accounted for.
If you're buying new boots, allow time to get used to them before your holiday wherever possible.
